When I first started out as a word-butcher-cum-sub-cum-writer in London I used to drink with a lot of old boys who'd been in the magazine and newspaper industry for years. One of these was something of a legend and I was once berating a management decision to sack a raft of people as a cost-cutting measure and he very sagely leant over, put his hand on my shoulder and offered the following calm words of advice.
'The thing about management is... what you always have to remember is... the thing is... pretty much all of 'em... they're all cunts...'
His words have stayed with me to this day.
